a long time we found my father, and my brother, who was with him. I remember this distinctly, because I was very scared at the awful ugly beast that wanted to eat us. Years later, my brother Cain and myself would often go to play and search for food, but we were not allowed to go far away for fear of these awful wild beasts, and father and mother would always watch us. As we grew older we learned to catch wild sheep and goats, and some other animals, and to catch fish; we also learned the kinds of fruit to eat, and where to find seeds and roots to eat; father also showed us how to make a fire with sticks or stones, if we could not get it any other way; he also showed us how to make spears, bows and arrows, and huts out of leaves and grass and sticks; mother knew how to cook food on the fire, and make vessels out of earth, and burn them to make them hard, father and mother could write as they talked and we learned a little at a time. Cain and myself used to have a great many disputes in our Play as he was very quick tempered, and used to want everything that I had and I would often give these things to himso as not to have him get mad; for he was older and bigger than I was, and I remember how at different times as we grew up we had fights, and growled, snarled, and snapped at each other like the wild beasts about us when they were ugly; father and mother would stop us, but they too would often dispute, but they never fought as we did, and it seemed to... --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.
