The text of the best children’s books is like poetry, the end product is far greater than the sum of the components. Once a child has heard books like that their natural reaction is to say, “Read it again.” This book does not rise to that level.
It is a good story about a beautiful princess that with the help of a golden bird sings a lullaby at night that puts the subjects of the kingdom to sleep and puts pleasant dreams in their heads. There is a wicked witch that dislikes the current situation
and casts a spell so that the lullaby by the princess now puts bad dreams in the heads of the subjects. There is a bit of back and forth of spell casting and breaking before the princess emerges victorious with the help of a handsome prince.
As this outline suggests, the story is one that is very formulaic with no real originality. The images are of modest quality, no extreme colors and with no precise detail. While this is a good story with a standard fairy tale happy ending, it is not one that grabs and keeps your attention.
