I decided, this morning, to call upon Sanders, the man Leyton recommended to me, as I could not think of anything else to do. Sanders has done all he can, and so we have parted by mutual consent. Thursday 20 February I dined with Leyton again this evening. He, Sir John Middleton and I are becoming fast friends. It is a relief for me to have some cheerful company, for without it I would be sunk in a continual gloom.
