By a quarter past twelve, most people were gone, apart from a few of Hugh’s friends, who’d gathered in the bar for a final round of drinks. At twenty-five past, I was standing in the entrance, as Alex had instructed. By twenty to one, he still hadn’t turned up, and he didn’t appear to be answering his phone.
