“They both wore Stetson hats, men’s shirts, levis pants and boots. While Ma was used to such attire when travelling, April had expressed some dismay on discovering she would be expected to dress that way. ‘What’s up, gal?’ Ma grinned. ‘Nothing, except that I look like hell, feel worse and wish I’d stayed in Fort Sawyer and let the Flores boys shoot me. At least I’d’ve died pretty and quick. This way, I’ll be pounded to death from the seat up.’ Ma chuckled. ‘Comes another day or two, you’ll have ...calluses so thick on your butt-end you’ll not feel the bumps.’ ‘Calluses on the butt-end’s the last thing I need,’ April groaned. ‘Do you reckon they’re after us yet, Ma?’ ‘If they are, the Kid’ll see them,’ Ma replied. ‘With luck, they don’t even know we’ve gone yet.’ On hearing Dusty’s intention to accompany the mustang-hunt, Colonel Monaltrie had forgotten all his misgivings and awarded the contract to the Schell family. I'm really getting sick of the many references to "The Big Texan", a if he were 6'6" instead of 5'5 1/2" This nonsense about how he grows big, is Superman stuff and there are no telephone booths around. And the way the writer describes EVERYTHING, like his finger tightened on the trigger, he raised his arm and sighted sown the barrel, then the trigger began to descend, and when it hit the cap, the fulminate of mercury shot into the touch hole and ignited the powder, driving a ball .9435 of an ounce down the barrel, on its way it begins to increase speed with the force of .768 of an oz. of Peterson's De Luxe sifted gunpowder, and then it leaves the barrel. Travelling in an almost straight line before being pulled don an inch by gravity...etc.etc. ".....and more drivel.

Colin "began to blow"... The writer does not seem to know much about bagpipes, except that the sound is not very pleasant. This old ploy has been used in MNAY cheap novels for the same purposes.
Before a sound is uttered by the pipes, the player has to do more than "fill his lungs and begin to blow. He has to Fill the BAG first, then tuck it under his arm, if not there already, then, start using the chanter and the sounds will emerge.

The end of Chapter none shows that the Army Colonel, regardless of his kinship to the kilted Scot Colin, intended to give the horse contract to branch, even though he KNEW that Branch was a crook and brought in bad horses. Not much of an expert and should not have been in that position of authority
